Obituary

Barbour, Lisa Anne 1957 - 2010 Lisa Anne Barbour passed into the loving arms of her Savior on December 2, 2010, surrounded by her beloved family and friends. Lisa had fought a valiant 18-month battle against breast cancer. Born March 26, 1957 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Anne and Jack Townsend, Lisa spent her childhood years in Virginia and North Carolina. Lisa, the eldest of five children, was an avid learner and deeply interested in the world around her. Her zest for learning earned her the honor of Valedictorian at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington in 1979. She went on to pursue her law degree at the University of Virginia, graduating in 1982. Following graduation, Lisa began her law career at Locke Purnell, in Dallas, Texas, where she met her husband, David, and specialized in corporate law and structured finance. In 1998, she retired from the practice of law at the Andrews Kurth law firm to devote her time and energies to her precious boys, Blake and Ben. In 1998, Lisa and David began to split their time between Dallas and Beaver Creek, Colorado, a place they had come to love for its natural beauty. In addition to her devotion to her family, Lisa was a dedicated volunteer to numerous causes and charities. Lisa taught Catechesis at St. Michaels and All Angels Episcopal Church and was very involved with the Child Abuse Prevention Center. Her greatest commitment while in Beaver Creek was to her church, the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration, and its ministries. She was an active vestry member and Sunday school teacher until her illness was diagnosed in 2009. Lisa is survived by her husband, David; sons Blake and Ben; stepchildren Baker Barbour of Austin, Texas and Brandy and husband, Bill Morrison and grandchildren, Riley and Will, of Dallas, Texas; mother Anne Townsend of Wilmington, North Carolina; siblings Katherine and husband Peter McKee of Dallas, Texas; Mark and wife Carol Townsend of Greensboro, North Carolina; Jack and wife Elisa Townsend of Atlanta, Georgia; Charles and wife Lisette Townsend of Copenhagen, Denmark; and 8 nephews and 5 nieces. Lisa will be remembered for her faith, her devotion to family and friends, her brilliant mind and quick wit, her kind and gracious spirit, her generosity and her love of life. She had a passion for travel and writing, compiling journals about her experiences in trips around the world. Family gatherings in Bald Head Island, North Carolina and Copenhagen, Denmark were some of her most cherished times. Lisa was also renowned as a consummate hostess, welcoming family and friends, old and new, with warmth and true Southern hospitality into her home. The family sincerely thanks the multitude of friends who showered Lisa and her family with love and support throughout her journey and ultimate victory in Christ. The love they have shown serves as an inspirational reminder of I Corinthians 13: 7-8 "Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends." Our shared love for Lisa knows no bounds.

I did not know Mark had died until I read this memorial notice. I did a basic search to make sure I was looking at the "right" Mark Wilson. I am so saddened; somehow, it seems wrong that someone our age has gone.
Mark had a great mind, a true wit. The last time I saw him was in 1977, when he came to visit with his brother Robert Glover at East Carolina University. He started a theater company in Blowing Rock, N.C. I was glad when I read his obit to see that he was able to practice is art and his craft. I have a lot of good memories of conversations with Mark about all kinds of topics --music, books, John Lennon (of course), pre-adult angst, politics (neither of us were Nixon's greatest fan), and so on. He introduced me to the writer Kurt Vonnegut Jr., and Dalton Trumbo's great book "Johnny Got His Gun."
I wish I could have caught up with him in later years. His is a loss to his art and to me personally.
